Pakistan flooding kills hundreds
Heavy monsoon rains since Thursday have triggered flooding, landslides, and rising waters that swept away entire villages, leaving many trapped under rubble. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province reported the majority of fatalities, with 317 deaths as torrential rains caused homes to collapse and villages to be buried.
Suleman Khan, a schoolteacher from Buner district, recounted losing 25 relatives as he watched his home and surrounding buildings swept away. In Buner, more than 150 people remain missing, with at least 208 confirmed dead and 10 to 12 villages partially buried. Asfandyar Khattak, head of the provincial disaster authority, said missing individuals could be trapped under debris or swept away by floodwaters. Dozens more are reported missing in Shangla district.
Around 2,000 rescue workers are operating across nine affected districts, but continued rainfall is slowing progress. Bilal Ahmad Faizi, a rescue agency spokesman, warned that survival chances for those buried are very slim. AFP journalists reported half-buried vehicles, mud-covered homes, and scattered belongings in Buner.
After days without electricity, power was restored on Sunday. Grave digger Qaiser Ali Shah described the emotional toll, having dug 29 graves, including six for children, saying he could no longer continue due to exhaustion and grief. Flooded roads and fallen trees have hampered rescue operations, leaving residents like shopkeeper Noor Muhammad working to clear mud and salvage their ruined belongings.
