Japan, Germany Commit to Strengthen Security Partnership
This commitment was made during their inaugural “strategic dialogue” held in Tokyo.
The meeting was jointly led by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, who is visiting Japan for three days.
Iwaya remarked that the global order “faces severe challenges,” emphasizing that the necessity for cooperation between Japan and Germany “is increasing,” as stated in a release by the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
Both nations have already implemented several measures to reinforce security ties.
Notably, a bilateral "acquisition and cross-servicing” agreement came into effect in July last year, facilitating joint military exercises between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the German armed forces.
Wadephul expressed to Iwaya that “Japan is a special partner in Asia that shares the same values and principles,” and Germany plans to “further deepen cooperation.”
Highlighting the interconnectedness of global regions, the senior Japanese official stated, “The Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific have become increasingly inseparable,” and welcomed Germany’s ongoing involvement in the region through asset deployment and other initiatives.
Japan and Germany, which established diplomatic relations in 1861, are part of international groups such as the G7 and G20.
Trade between the two countries has grown substantially, exceeding $47 billion in recent years.
