Louvre Museum Resumes Service After Major Jewelry Heist
While the museum welcomed visitors again, the Apollo Gallery—site of Sunday’s heist—remains closed.
Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau revealed Tuesday that the stolen jewelry’s value is estimated at nearly 90 million euros. “The damage has been estimated by the Louvre curator at 88 million euros (about 102 million U.S. dollars), an extremely spectacular amount that has no equivalent and cannot be compared with the historical loss,” Beccuau told media.
The robbery involved eight pieces from the French crown jewels housed at the Louvre. The four burglars behind the heist remain on the run, as authorities have mobilized roughly 100 investigators to locate the suspects and recover the priceless items.
French President Emmanuel Macron vowed that "everything" is being done "everywhere" to bring the criminals to justice, with efforts coordinated by the Paris prosecutor’s office.
