Most Germans Oppose Military Aid to Israel
The representative survey, commissioned by Korber Stiftung, found that 82% of Germans opposed their nation’s military support for Israel in its ongoing “brutal war in Gaza,” while just 15% showed approval.
Additionally, almost three-quarters (73%) of respondents believed the German government should apply stronger diplomatic pressure on Israel to address the conflict.
The study also highlighted a notable change in German perceptions of historical responsibility. Around 60% of those surveyed rejected the idea that Germany has a special obligation toward Israel due to its past and the Holocaust, with only 38% adhering to the traditional view.
The representative survey was conducted by the Forsa polling institute from September 15 to 26, interviewing more than 1,500 German citizens.
It continues a series of polls in recent months that demonstrate an expanding divide between public sentiment and the government’s stance on the Middle East crisis.
Germany has historically been one of Israel’s largest arms suppliers. Between October 7, 2023, and June 5, 2025, Germany approved arms sales to Israel totaling over €492 million ($567 million).
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is a vocal supporter of Israel, had imposed restrictions on arms exports to the country in August in response to rising public pressure.
These limitations paused the approval of new weapons licenses that could be deployed in the Gaza war. However, the restrictions were lifted earlier this week.
