International organizations host experts to discuss online gaming
The meeting, jointly organized by three international and national bodies, marked the third installment of a global forum dedicated to addictive behaviors. Participants explored how a public health–oriented approach can be applied to understanding the scale, underlying mechanisms, and prevention of addiction, while also stressing the critical role of early diagnosis and intervention.
In opening remarks, Mehmet Dinc, head of the Turkish Green Crescent Society, underlined the widespread impact of behavioral addictions linked to digital environments, noting that millions of people around the world are affected. “Today, digital platforms are designed to constantly keep attention, manipulate behavior, and create addiction,” he said. “The price for this is often paid by mental health, financial stability, family well-being, and social cohesion.” He urged society at large to act swiftly and decisively to counter the spread of such addictions.
During the sessions, Beccy Cooper, a member of the British parliament, drew attention to the increasing scale of gambling addiction in the United Kingdom. She stressed that authorities must respond firmly, particularly by curbing aggressive marketing practices and banning gambling advertisements to limit exposure and harm.
Professor Heather Wardle, co-chair of a major public health commission focused on gambling, pointed to a noticeable shift toward casinos, online slot games, and physical slot machines. She warned that the expanding commercialization and legalization of gambling activities introduce serious risks and complex challenges for public health systems, calling for stronger regulatory and preventive measures.
