UK Unemployment Reaches Highest Level Since 2021
This represents the highest rate recorded since January 2021, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
For individuals aged 16 and over, the unemployment rate increased from 5% in the preceding quarter. By October, the total number of unemployed people reached approximately 1.8 million.
A year earlier, during the same August-October period, the unemployment rate was 4.3%.
Meanwhile, the employment rate stood at 75%, with the number of payrolled employees totaling 30.3 million as of October.
Estimates indicate that the number of employees in the UK fell by 180,000, or 0.6%, between October 2024 and October 2025, and decreased by 32,000 (0.1%) between September and October.
Looking specifically at the August-to-October period, employee numbers declined by 109,000 (0.4%) over the year and by 26,000 (0.1%) compared with the previous quarter.
