Trump Says No Near Plans to Recognize Somaliland

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump declared Friday he has no plans to swiftly recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, despite Israel's historic acknowledgment of the breakaway region.

"Everything is under study ... We'll study it. I study a lot of things and always make great decisions and they turn out to be correct," Trump told the New York Post during a telephone conversation.

The president questioned international awareness of the region, asking: "Does anyone know what Somaliland is, really?"

When pressed about Somaliland's offer to grant Washington access to a strategically vital port along the Gulf of Aden—a critical shipping corridor—Trump brushed aside the proposition with a terse reply: "Big deal."

Israel made history Friday as the inaugural nation to officially acknowledge Somaliland's independence from Somalia. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to brief Trump on the development during their scheduled Monday summit.

In a video conference with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi celebrating the diplomatic breakthrough, Netanyahu indicated he would discuss Somaliland's desire to participate in the Abraham Accords with the American leader.

Trump emphasized the Netanyahu meeting will concentrate on Gaza Strip matters, specifically the ceasefire agreement he negotiated in October and post-conflict rebuilding initiatives operating under United Nations authorization, rather than the Somaliland recognition question.
