Xi Urges Respect for Sovereignty in Middle East Amid US–Iran Tensions
In what were described as his first public remarks on the region since the US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, Xi stressed that “the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of countries in the Middle East and Gulf region should be fully respected, and the safety of personnel, facilities, and institutions of all countries should be effectively safeguarded.”
His comments were made during a meeting in Beijing with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to state media reports.
While Xi’s statement did not directly reference the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, it came amid heightened regional instability and ongoing diplomatic fallout.
He also proposed the development of a “common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable” security framework for the region, outlining a four-point initiative aimed at promoting long-term peace and stability. The proposal emphasized principles such as respect for sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, adherence to international law, and coordination between development and security.
Sheikh Khaled began a three-day visit to China on Sunday, further underscoring expanding diplomatic and economic engagement between the two sides.
