Qatar Calls for 'Regional' Resolution to Hormuz Crisis
"Everyone must work toward a sustainable solution on this issue," Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said in statements carried by media.
Al-Ansari was unequivocal on the question of access, stating that "the security of the Strait of Hormuz must not be threatened by any party, and there should be no preconditions for reopening it."
He further pushed back sharply against escalatory rhetoric from any quarter. "The language of threats is unacceptable, and we deal with all threats in a way that ensures the safety of our country," the spokesman said.
Al-Ansari stressed there has been "no issue" in managing the strait thus far, while cautioning that the repercussions of any closure would extend far beyond global energy markets.
On the fragile US-Iran truce, the Qatari spokesman insisted the ceasefire "must continue," signaling that Doha's immediate focus lies in consolidating rather than expanding the agreement. He also voiced Qatar's backing for Lebanon's de-escalation efforts and called for an end to the Israeli war there, reaffirming Doha's broader commitment to resolving regional conflicts through dialogue.
The remarks come as tensions across the region remain at a boiling point. US and Israeli forces launched joint strikes against Iran on Feb. 28, killing and wounding thousands. Tehran answered with retaliatory missile and drone strikes on Israel, Iraq, Jordan, and Gulf states hosting American military assets, while simultaneously restricting passage through the Strait of Hormuz — before a two-week ceasefire was brokered last week.
Direct US-Iran talks convened in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Saturday in a bid to chart a path toward ending the conflict, but negotiations broke off early Sunday without an agreement.
