N. Korea Renounces Obligation Under Any Nuclear Treaty
(MENAFN) North Korea has openly declared it recognizes no obligation under international nuclear non-proliferation law, state-run media reported Thursday.
Kim Song, Pyongyang's permanent representative to the United Nations, issued a pointed statement accusing the United States and several allied nations of deliberately poisoning the atmosphere at the 11th NPT Review Conference, currently convened at UN headquarters in New York City, by directing scrutiny toward North Korea's nuclear arsenal.
The high-stakes conference — formally the 11th Review Conference of Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons — has brought together diplomats from across the globe at a moment of heightened anxiety over nuclear risks and intensifying strategic rivalry between world powers.
Kim left no room for ambiguity in asserting his country's stance.
"The position of the DPRK (North Korea) as a nuclear weapons state does not change in accordance with rhetorical assertion or unilateral desire of outsiders. Clarifying once again, the DPRK is not bound by the NPT in any case," Kim said.
The North Korean envoy went further, leveling a sweeping indictment against Washington and its Western partners for what he described as a deliberate subversion of the conference's founding purpose.
"The NPT review conference, which should contribute to the international issue of nuclear disarmament and the solution of the root cause of the danger of nuclear conflict, loses its original mission and turns into a place of malicious accusation against the sovereign states according to the sinister political attempt of the U.S. and Western forces. This is the fundamental reason why the global non-proliferation system is weakening," Kim added.
Pyongyang's defiant declaration delivers a direct challenge to the international community at one of the most consequential nuclear diplomacy forums in years, raising fresh doubts over the long-term viability of the global non-proliferation framework.
